Adam Fairhall & Tom Ward – 13 Sept 2018

This month’s special guests are:

Tom Ward and Adam Fairhall represent the fertile exchanges in creative music between Manchester and London that have occurred in recent years, involving such organisations as London’s LUME (with which Tom and Adam are associated) and Manchester’s Efpi label (on which both Tom and Adam have releases). Tom and Adam first played together as a duo at a LUME improvisation event when their names were drawn out of a hat, and they have continued to meet regularly to play ever since. Adam is based near Manchester, Tom in London.

Together Tom and Adam produce highly conversational free music with a broad range of attacks and textures. In addition to piano, Adam may bring another mechanical keyboard instrument from a collection that includes harmonium, accordion and toy piano, and Tom may play on a tambin (also known as a fula flute) and bass clarinet in addition to his usual alto sax. Exploring the textures and hints of idiom that these instruments allow has become an enduring interest of the duo.

On Adam:
“Fairhall’s piano is a questing, quixotic voice with a comprehensive ‘inside and out’ vocabulary” – Jazzwise
On Tom:
“Cutting-edge contemporary music, but it’s unexpectedly engaging emotionally” – The Guardian

Before and after their sets will be the usual business where you put your names in our hat and we all have a great time.
