Seth Bennett & Cath Roberts – 9 November 2017

Cath Roberts and Seth Bennett started playing together in Roberts’ band Sloth Racket, set up to explore her compositions for free improvising ensemble, and decided to branch out into a duo as a side project. They play with the possibilities inherent in combining Bennett’s five string double bass with Roberts’ baritone saxophone – both instruments have a very wide range of pitch and timbre, and they share a large “grey area” of common ground, as well as factors unique to each. During the three years they have been playing together, the duo have developed a language that may travel from the freer ends of jazz through to mainstream European free improvisation, and have expressly decided not to exclude any music that may arise during improvisations which comes from their other interests, which range from Indie Rock and hip-hop through to contemporary classical music.Cath is a force on the London scene, co-promoting gigs under the Lume banner, running various ensembles, and playing regularly. Seth lives in Perthshire, and travels all over Britain and Europe, with musical roots in the West Riding and Manchester, as well as playing in several bands based in London.
