About
Founded in June 2007 by Anton Hunter, Kate Findlay and Tullis Rennie; The Noise Upstairs is focused around a monthly free-improv jam night in Withington, Manchester. The basic premise is that anyone can turn up and join in by putting their name in the hat. Names are then pulled out in threes and the resulting trios improvise together and so on. Since the latter half of 2008 the nights have also featured sets from guest artists, designed to give local and touring artists an appreciative audience to play to, whilst also giving the regulars a chance to play with musicians they wouldn’t have otherwise. As first Tullis and then Kate departed for bigger, sunnier cities, Anton drafted in one-man improvising machine Rodrigo Constanzo to co-run and re-vamp the Noise Upstairs (you’re looking at the website he’s made), and we’re looking forward to our third year as South Manchester’s premier free improvisation night.
