Pollen Count – 24 September 2019

By Ramsey Janini  //  Performances  //  No Comments

The Noise Upstairs returns to the Lion for an 8th month (and counting) on Tuesday 24 September. This month we’re delighted to welcome newly-formed Pollen Count as our guest act.

Before and after their set we’ll pull names from the hat to jam. As ever the night is free, and we’ll start to gather from 7.30. See you there!

pollen count

Pollen Count is a new trio of Lou on vocals & loops, Richard Knight on no-input mixer and Keith Jafrate on saxophone, three very different musical personalities each with their own approach, and all active in the Calder Valley’s vibrant music community.

Using a mixture of prepared material and improvisation, their music is not fixed in one place, and can swerve from fierce abstraction into a lyrical groove. The trio was formed out of curiosity, to see how the members’ contrasting vocabularies could cohere, but also to see how they might evolve.

Lou performs solo as BLT 63, and her background is in film and performance. She’s a commanding singer, intense and theatrical.

Richard Knight is the genius of no-input science who manipulates noise like a virtuoso soloist. He has played in all kinds of line-ups, with a host of different improvisers.

Keith Jafrate plays with Trio Uroboro, orfeo 5, Wolfscarers, Hornweb and Murmurists. He’s a lyrical player, whether playing free or in time, always in search of the song-line.

About The Noise Upstairs

The Noise Upstairs is an improv collective which runs a free-improv night in Manchester. The basic premise is that anyone can turn up and join in by putting their name in the hat. Names are pulled out, ensembles formed, and hearts broken.
